Solid Gold Sound Club Newsletter

The official UCLA support organization for the UCLA Bruin Marching Band
Spring 1998

The efforts of the Solid Gold Sound Club made a spectacular debut by sending a contingent of the UCLA Band to the Texas game. One can only speculate on what effect the presence of the band had on the team as they demolished Texas 66 to 3, but we were happy to be there and the UCLA fans in attendance and watching on TV were happy too!

So far, over 280 band alumni and other friends of the band have pledged over $61,000, and over $25,000 has already been received! Thanks to your support, we are now making plans for the next trip

to the UCLA vs. Miami in the Orange Bowl on September 26, 1998. We are hoping to send 30 to 40 bandmembers to this game. Last year we sent a pep band to the Texas game and we ended up playing in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Does that mean we'll be in the Orange Bowl next New Years Day? Stay tuned.

Plans for future trips include Ohio State in 1999, Washington in 2000, and Alabama in 2001. In the more distant future, we are looking at the Notre Dame game in 2006!

Band Alumni Reunion 1998

The 5th Biannual Band Alumni Reunion will be held on Saturday, October 31, 1998, at the Homecoming football game versus Stanford. Preliminary plans call for the rehearsal to be held on a parking lot adjacent to the Rose Bowl, so it will be much more convenient to participate than in previous years.
We will be sending out registration forms this summer. Since this year's Reunion falls on Halloween, the music for this event will be a medley of ghoulish hits and everyone is encouraged to come in costume (prizes for the best ones !) So mark your calendars and make plans to be there!
