Fight Songs

Sons of Westwood
By Jerry Livingston, Kelly James, Bill Hansen

Sons of Westwood is UCLA's main fight song. It began life as a fight song for the Cal-Berkeley Band known as "Big C", and was adopted as a UCLA fight song in the early 60's.
	    We are Sons of Westwood,
And we hail the Blue and Gold.
True to thee our hearts will be,
Our love will not grow old,
	    fight, fight, fight.

Bruins roam the hills of Westwood,
	    By the blue Pacific shore,
And if by chance you see,
	    A man from USC,
	    Ev'ry Bruin starts to roar.

	    U...C...L...A...UCLA,
	    Fight, Fight, Fight

The Mighty Bruins
     Music by Bill Conti
Words by Don Holley and Barbara Lamb

"The Mighty Bruins" was commissioned by the UCLA Alumni Association to commemorate its 50th Anniversary. "The Mighty Bruins" was composed by Bill Conti, who won the Academy Award for his music in the movie "The Right Stuff". "The Mighty Bruins" is also known as UCLA's victory march and at football games, it is played following each UCLA touchdown and field goal.

	    We are the mighty Bruins,
The BEST team in the west.
	    We're marching on to VIC-TO-RY
	    To conquer all the rest.

	    We ARE the Mighty Bruins,
	    Triumphant evermore.
You can hear, from far and near,
	    The Mighty Bruin roar.

	    U...C...L...A...UCLA,
	    Fight, Fight, Fight

By the Old Pacific
     By Thomas Beall
By the Old Pacific's rolling waters,
Loyally we stand each son and daughter,
Hail the emblem of our Alma Mater,
	    Mighty Bruin Bear.

	    California, hail your warriors,
	    Marching to the fray.
They go forth to win more laurels,
	    For our name today.

Bruin Bear, let loose thy thunder,
	    Vict'ry's flag unfold.
	    Rend your enemies asunder,
	    For the Blue and Gold.

Hail to the Hills of Westwood
     By Jeane M. Emerson '29
Hail to the Hills of Westwood,
	    To the mighty sea below.
	    Hail to our Alma Mater,
	    She will conquer ev'ry foe.

For we're loyal to the Southland,
	    Her honor we'll uphold.
We'll gladly give our hearts to thee,
To the Blue and to the Gold.

Strike Up the Band for UCLA

In 1936, George and Ira Gershwin dedicated to UCLA a new version of their hit song "Strike Up the Band" and retitled it "Strike Up the Band for UCLA". Since that time, the song has been closely associated with the school and has been a regular part of the Band's repertoire. "Strike Up the Band for UCLA" has been the opening production of the Band's pregame show since 1986.
