William C. Ackerman Memorial Scholarship Fund
Affectionately known as “Mr. A”, Bill Ackerman gave his entire life to UCLA students, from his graduation in 1924 until his death in 1988. As head of Associated Students UCLA, as an NCAA award-winning tennis coach, as adviser, confident and friend, “Mr. A” left an indelible mark on generations of UCLA students.
Fittingly, the William C. Ackerman Memorial Scholarship Fund honors UCLA students who exhibit the exceptional leadership qualities evidenced by Bill Ackerman. By granting multi-year scholarships to students who demonstrate qualities of leadership, ASUCLA ensures that Bill Ackerman’s spirit, as well as his name, will be remembered and honored.
The Ackerman Scholarship falls under the Freshman Scholarship Program administered by the UCLA Alumni Association. The scholarship is awarded to one state finalist in the Freshman Program. Past UCLA student recipients of the Ackerman Scholarship have included:

ASUCLA – George Oliver, Jr. Award
The ASUCLA-Oliver Award promotes and rewards leadership in debate and public speaking about pressing public policy issues. The Award supports the instructional and competitive Forensic activities for UCLA students and is administered through the Department of Speech and Communications.
The first Oliver was awarded to a UCLA student in 1946 for her skills as an orator, debater, and as a leader. Recipients of this award join a host of previous winners, many who have gone on to distinguished careers in public service.

Edward A. Dickson Journalism Fund
The Dickson Journalism Fund is administered by UCLA Student Media and is awarded to a high school or community college journalist enrolling at UCLA. The Nell and John R. Wooden Scholarship
For 27 years, John Robert Wooden graced UCLA by establishing a tradition of excellence both on and off the basketball court. While he may be best remembered as the architect who crafted UCLA’s ten national basketball championships, to those who know him or have followed his life and philosophy, he is seen as so much more – a teacher, mentor and role model.
This scholarship is a reflection of Coach Wooden’s values and his life. It will be awarded on the basis of financial need to a deserving undergraduate student with a preference to students studying English or with an interest in Literature. The committee that will review and recommend individuals for the scholarship will include student representatives from the Associated Students UCLA.
The fund raising process is underway to endow this scholarship and it is expected that the first award will be made in Spring, 2002.
