Reducing Waste
  • We recycle white paper, cardboard AND CANS and plastic bottles.
  • We reuse most cardboard and recycle the rest.
  • We use recycled packing materials.
  • We provide biodegradable containers and utensils in the GREENHOUSE and CURBSIDE. Currently spudware is replaced with individually wrapped utensils due to the H1N1 high alert. Spudware will return when recommended.
  • We provide TWO Refillable Mug Programs in our Coffeehouses, with a significant discount in coffee and soda. Or customers can bring their own mugs for a smaller discount.
  • We buy food products and chemicals in bulk.
  • We use towel dispensers with motion sensors in our facilities that dispense towels made from a 100% renewable resource.
  • New! Paperless hand-dryers have been installed in Lu Valle Commons and in Ackerman Union restrooms and save 500,000 paper towels from going to the trash every year.
  • We offer digital textbooks.
  • We sell recycled paper products such as writing paper, paper towels, tissue.
  • Our restaurant napkins are made from recycled paper.
Conserving Energy
  • We are phasing in ENERGY-STAR equipment wherever possible.
  • We use T-5, T-8 and compact fluorescent lights which last longer and use less energy.
  • Lighting in most offices and storage areas are on motion sensors.
  • Unused restaurant equipment is shut down to maximize energy conservation.
Conserving Water
  • Our waterless urinals at Lu Valle Commons have reduced water use by nearly half.
  • We are phasing in faucets with aerators.
  • We are phasing in low-flow toilets that use less water per flush than conventional toilets use.
  • We are phasing in toilets and faucets with motion sensors in our restrooms.
Reducing Chemical Use
  • We provide customers with a safe way to dispose of batteries.
  • We use glass and surface cleaner without ammonia.
  • We use paper products that are NOT chlorine bleached.
  • We are phasing in sustainable carpeting that uses environmentally-friendly dyes and glues.
  • We dispose of all light bulbs, batteries, grease and hazardous waste to minimize impact to the environment.
  • We sell eco-friendly alternatives for laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, all-purpose cleaner and carpet cleaner.

Save a cup from going into a landfill and save money! We offer a substantial discount in coffee when you use our ceramic mug or library-approved travel mug. Or get a smaller discount when you bring your own mug. Mugs and refills are available at all UCLA Restaurant Coffeehouse locations.

What you can do for your planet?
  • Turn off electronic devices and lights when not in use.
  • Make less trash. Avoid using extra napkins, bags and packaging.
  • Recycle more & buy recycled products.
  • Drive less. Find alternative options at UCLA Transportation Services.
  • Check out UCLA's Household Hazardous Waste Program Website to find out how to dispose of computers, batteries, cell phones and household chemicals safely.
  • Save water and use less hot water. Shorter showers are key!
  • Adjust your thermostat: 76 in the summer, 68 in the winter.
  • Replace your incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb.
