CalFresh now accepted at Health Sciences Store

Operationalized Dec. 14, 2023, CalFresh acceptance is now live at the Health Sciences Store — the second location on the UCLA campus to accept the federal food assistance benefits.

Los Angeles, Calif., Jan. 8, 2023 – Building upon the invaluable resource for UCLA’s on-campus community, the UCLA Store’s Health Sciences Store now accepts CalFresh electronic benefits for food and groceries.

One of six UCLA Store locations, the Health Sciences Store is the second storefront on the UCLA campus to accept CalFresh — federally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — following the launch of the service at the UCLA Store in Ackerman Union in August 2022. The Health Sciences Store is located near the Center for Health Sciences, serving the UCLA schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and public health.

“The acceptance of CalFresh benefits for food and groceries at two UCLA Store locations is a significant step toward ensuring food accessibility for all,” said Peter Poon, UCLA Store director.

Campus groups driving the CalFresh efforts include the CalFresh Initiative under the UCLA Community Programs Office, 580 Café, Economic Crisis Response Team, UCLA Basic Needs Committee, The Green Initiative Fund, Semel HCI Center, UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services and UCLA Campus Life.

This expansion to the Health Sciences Store, a student-run enterprise of Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) is yet another step taken to work toward food security among UCLA students. With the intent to operationalize CalFresh electronic benefits at all UCLA Store locations in the near future, ASUCLA currently provides another avenue for food redemptions with the acceptance of meal swipes at all ASUCLA Restaurants and coffeehouse locations.
