Kerckhoff makes a cameo in “Oppenheimer”

If you’ve studied in the lounge on the third floor of Kerckhoff Hall or attended an event at the Charles E. Young Grand Salon, you might recognize some of the rooms in Christopher Nolan’s newest film, “Oppenheimer.” For one week, certain rooms in Kerckhoff Hall went from humble study spaces to movie sets for a major motion picture.

“Oppenheimer”, which released in theaters July 21, is a biopic film following American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the team of scientists who developed the first atomic bomb. The cast includes star actors such as Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh and others.

Filming for “Oppenheimer” took place at Kerckhoff Hall between Feb. 17-24, 2022. During that week, the Charles E. Young Grand Salon, Kerckhoff Art Gallery and Louise Kerckhoff Third Floor Study Lounge were transformed into elaborate recreations of Oppenheimer’s laboratory and dormitory. Kerckhoff Hall’s iconic look and many versatile, historic aspects made it a great location for the “Oppenheimer” crew.

“Oppenheimer” joins films like “Legally Blonde” and “Scream 2” in the extensive catalogue of movies filmed at UCLA. IMDb, an online database on entertainment media, lists 313 titles with a filming location in UCLA. To learn more about movies filmed at UCLA, visit the link below.
