Recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month in May

National Mental Health Month, also commonly known as Mental Health Awareness Month, is observed throughout the month of May. Below is more information on how to participate in mental health practices and discussions at UCLA.

UCLA clubs and organizations

There are numerous UCLA club events that serve as outlets for students to discuss mental health with the Bruin community. For example, Wazo Connect is a peer mentorship program with CAPS, CARE and LGBTQ+ training. Clairissa Mangal, co-president of Wazo Connect, encourages students to join the club’s activities and events, such as goat yoga. To learn more, visit their Instagram @wazoconnect. Another example is HART at UCLA. Nellie Cox, president of HART at UCLA, explains that HART stands for Healing through the Arts, to provide a space for students to practice mindfulness through art. To learn more, visit their Instagram @uclahart.

Below is a brief overview of additional clubs that serve as opportunities to discuss more about mental health:

  • Active Minds: A group advocating for mental health and de-stigmatizing conversations on mental illness.

ASUCLA reached out to these organizations and have not received responses at the time of publication. Though this is not an exhaustive list on all student organizations regarding mental health, the UCLA Community site provides a full list of health and wellness groups at UCLA.

Wellness Wednesdays

ASUCLA’s Wellness Wednesdays are another way to take care and recognize mental health awareness as Bruins. The free weekly mental health and wellness event encourages the Bruin community to participate in various activities from crafts to relaxation methods. Bruins can attend Wellness Wednesdays during the fall, winter and spring quarters. Follow @asucla on Instagram in order to stay informed on Wellness Wednesdays!
