UCLA move out tips
The second half of spring quarter means the home stretch of the school year, and summer is right around the corner—as is move-out. Keep reading for some tips and resources that you may find helpful as you navigate the move-out process this year, from one student to another.
These suggestions were written by a student communications assistant based on personal experience and are not directions for move-out from ASUCLA as an organization.
Move out tips
There can be a lot of traffic on the Hill and around campus as commencement ceremonies are held the weekend after final exams finish, so moving out as early as possible can help to avoid the crowds. Making sure you know when you need to leave by, whether it’s the end of your lease or the last day to move out on the Hill, can help you plan for the best time to move out.
If you are going home for Memorial Day weekend or any time during spring quarter, bringing out-of-season clothes, like sweaters or coats that you won’t need for the rest of the year can make packing at the end of the year less stressful and save space.
Using zip-up bags like Ikea bags can streamline the packing process. In dorms and apartments, there can be limited storage space for suitcases, so foldable, reusable bags are great for moving in and out because they take up very little space during the year. Plus, they count as a checked bag on a plane!
Packing and going through all your clothes as you move out is a great time to declutter your wardrobe. UCLA Residential Life and Housing & Hospitality Services has bins set up around the Hill during move out days to donate clothes and electronic waste. For more information, visit the link below.
Summer storage space
If you have a friend who lives in the Los Angeles area and is able to store things for you, this can be one of the best summer storage options. Don’t want to ask your friend to transport your stuff to and from their house? The Uber Courier feature can help you bring your things there and back so your friend won’t have to.
Storage Scholars is UCLA’s approved storage vendor for storage needs, and their service includes a pickup and drop-off service. For more information, visit their website below.
Other self-storage options near campus include Public Storage and SoCal Self Storage, but may require students to have their own method of transportation for dropping off and picking up items. View their websites below for more information.
Planning for next year? Consider using BoxCamp to coordinate moving in and out, though they are not accepting any more offers for this summer. BoxCamp provides boxes for packing and students can coordinate UCLA-specific pickup and drop-off time frames, including drop-off dates timed for students moving back to campus for summer sessions A and C and students studying abroad in the fall. Move-out may feel far away now, but that just means you have the perfect opportunity to get ahead now, which can make a huge difference when the time comes. Wishing good luck to Bruins on midterms and finals and let’s finish the year strong!
