Café UCLA to honor Arthur Ashe’s Wimbledon victory 50th anniversary, legacy at Westwood weekend pop-up

To celebrate UCLA alumnus Arthur Ashe and his historic achievements in tennis and beyond, Bruins are invited to enjoy Café UCLA between June 27-29, with a speaker event on June 28.

Los Angeles, Calif., June 11, 2025 – On June 28, join Café UCLA in honor of the 50th anniversary of notable UCLA alumnus (’66) Arthur Ashe’s Wimbledon victory. A historic win, Ashe was, and still is, the first and only Black man to win the Wimbledon men’s tennis single title.

Presented in collaboration with the Arthur Ashe Legacy at UCLA, the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center and UCLA Alumni, Café UCLA will take place at 1037 Broxton Ave. in Westwood between June 27-29. The weekend-long event will commemorate the legacy with an engaging panel speaker event on June 28 between 2-5 p.m.; speaker details are to be announced on the @asucla Instagram.

“It’s an honor to celebrate Arthur Ashe’s legacy in a way that brings together the UCLA community to the heart of Westwood,” said Ari Baron, director of Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) Marketing Sales and Promotions. “Please join us at Café UCLA, as we recognize the powerful impact Bruins like Ashe can have on the world, both on and off the court.”

Café UCLA will not only celebrate the iconic win by the UCLA alumnus, but will also pay homage to Ashe’s legacy beyond athletics as a powerful advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and civil rights. Advocating for health care reform, Ashe’s work identified the need for further medical research in the early 1990s as he became an influential figure for destigmatizing HIV/AIDS.

The global brand and merchandise custodian of UCLA, ASUCLA will additionally feature a limited-edition, tennis-inspired capsule collection at Café UCLA. Reminiscent of the distinctive athletic uniforms worn by Ashe and the UCLA Tennis team in 1965, the line is now available at the UCLA Store, while supplies last.

All Bruins and UCLA fans are invited to attend Café UCLA to learn more about Ashe’s legacy, hear from community leaders and take home exclusive Café UCLA mementos.

Café UCLA is an ASUCLA initiative to bring an all-immersive UCLA brand experience beyond the UCLA campus. In 2024, the Association, in close collaboration with UCLA Alumni, brought blue-and-gold Bruin pride to Paris. This effort united UCLA alumni overseas during the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games to cheer on their fellow Bruins participating in the games.
