UCLA GPA and other academic criteria

UCLA GPA requirements differ for freshman and transfer applicants. According to the UCLA Admissions website, there are no GPA requirements for freshman applicants. However, transfers need a minimum GPA of 3.2, as it is required for their application to be considered. Below is a brief overview of the UCLA GPA requirements and other academic criteria for freshman and transfer UCLA applicants:

Freshman

According to the Freshman Requirements webpage, there are no GPA requirements for freshman applicants, but there are still academic requirements. Applicants must complete 15 A-G courses with at least 11 courses finished prior to the beginning of their last year of high school. Below is a list of the A-G requirements:

  • Two years of history/social science

  • Four years of college-preparatory English

  • Three years of mathematics (four years recommended)

  • Two years of laboratory science (three years recommended)

  • Two years of language other than English (three years recommended)

  • One year of visual-and-performing arts (if available)

  • One year of college-preparatory elective

Note that the above courses are only the minimum UC admission requirements — in order to be a competitive applicant, students should challenge themselves with courses beyond the requirements.

Transfer

According to the Transfer Requirements webpage, transfer applicants must achieve junior-level standing (60 semester or 90 quarter transferable units completed) by the end of the spring term before transfering. UCLA also requires completion of major preparation requirements and the following course requirements:

  • Two transferable courses in: English composition, critical thinking and writing

  • One transferable math course with a prerequisite of intermediate algebra or higher

  • Four transferable college courses in at least two of the following subject areas: arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences

Finally, as noted above, UCLA GPA requirements for transfer students are stricter than those for freshmen; UCLA requires a GPA of 3.2 or higher in order for a transfer application to be considered.
