Three Bruins creativity honored for Art in the Union, submissions commissioned by ASUCLA
Formally honored on May 15, three UCLA students were awarded for the annual ASUCLA Student Union Art in the Union contest, showcasing the creativity of UCLA students.
Los Angeles, Calif., May 29, 2025 – Associated Students UCLA (ASUCLA) commissioned artwork from three UCLA student Art in the Union gallery winners to be shared throughout ASUCLA Student Union facilities.
There were three winners recognized at a formal reception on May 15 from 4-6 p.m. in the Kerckhoff Art Gallery: Madeleine Tsoi second year bioengineering student, with a piece titled “Out of Storage;” Michelle Lin, first year statistic and data science student, created a piece titled “Resilience in Bloom;” and Diane Park, first year film student, made the piece “Bearing Multi-Tasks.” Winning students received $600 for their prize and their artwork hung in the historic ASUCLA Student union; Tsoi and Park will have their artwork featured in the UCLA Computer Store, a student-run enterprise of ASUCLA, as it was in alignment with the contest’s technology-inspired theme.
“These three selections will take their place in the ASUCLA Student Union and become a part of the rich variety of art which makes up the ASUCLA Art in the Union program,” said Pouria Abbassi, ASUCLA executive director and CEO.
There were 21 student entries to Art in the Union this year, with many different mediums submitted such as drawing, painting, textiles, graphic illustration and photography. The 2025 contest Art in the Union judging committee consisted of cross-departmental career staff members.
Art in the Union, previously known as the Student Commission Art Program, debuted in 1972. Each year, up to five pieces are selected and displayed throughout ASUCLA Student Union facilities, including Ackerman Union, Kerckhoff Hall, the North Campus Student Center and LuValle Commons. Today, more than 65 pieces adorn the walls of the union.
